Missions in Action

Serving through Disaster Relief

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. - Psalm 57:1-2

Do you have a heart for bringing the hope of Jesus to families devasted by natural disasters through provisions, services, and community outreach? St. Francis provides on-going and/or intermittent opportunities to serve those in need, either in a coordinated effort or on your own.

(If no opportunities are shown below, check back again as new opportunities are made available throughout the year.)

Western NC Mission Trip

May 18-24

St. Francis United Methodist Church is collaborating with other Charlotte-area United Methodist congregations to organize a 7-day mission project in Western NC to support Hurricane Helene cleanup and rebuilding.

We are seeking to create one or more 10-person teams to serve in the Spruce Pine or Asheville communities. Age 18+ volunteers are needed to help with residential debris cleanup and rebuilding projects. United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Early Response Team (ERT) training is helpful but not required.

Join us for an Informational Meeting on Tuesday, April 1 at 6PM at the St. Francis United Methodist Church Pavilion to learn more about opportunities to participate in this mission.

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a humanitarian organization that helps alleviate human suffering. UMCOR assists the most vulnerable people affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion or status. UMCOR’s work is carried out by providing relief and assistance in response to natural and human-made disasters and supporting programs in the areas of migration, health, food security and environmental sustainability.

To this end, UMCOR collects relief supplies in the form of cleaning kits, hygiene kits and menstrual hygiene kits that are assembled by United Methodist volunteers for distribution in the United States and its territories.

This is an individual or create-your-own-group opportunity. You can help by assembling relief supply kits to help keep UMCOR’s Relief Supplies Network ready to deliver goods in the hands of those in need throughout the U.S. and its territories following disasters. It’s best to form a church or community group to gather the requisite supplies and to assemble the kits.

Here are the instructions for each type of kit:
